I was reading an article in American Artist Drawing Mag and ran across the technique of imprimatura in colored pencil drawing. The context was: 'she uses light and dark umber as an imprimatura.'Does anyone know ?

I think imprimatura is an underpainting--to establish form and values before you do the actual color application. We do it in oil painting also, but actually have not tried it with watercolor. Jan
