Am just finishing a large watercolor gouache on Ampersand watercolor board and want to varnish it instead of using glass. Anybody have experience with this process? Recommendations for brands of spray fixatives?

Any major brand of spray fix will work. You are basically putting a thin layer of plastic on top of the gouache. I used to go to a local gallery and see the opaque watercolors of Frank Hamilton which were prepared this way. They were amazing! Make sure you test this on a scrap that you have applied gouache on so that you can achieve the look you want. Some prefer a very matte look and others want a little shine.

Thanks, Scott. Am in the final stages of touching up my painting, so went ahead and ordered the Ampersand fixative that the watercolor board recommends. The can has better directions than most of the published info I have been able to find. I'm not familiar with the artist you mentioned and will look him up on the Net. Thanks for the info and artist reference. Tommye
