I have just competed an oil painting using Winsor Newton oil colors on birch plywood (primed first with acrylic gesso). Walnut oil is the only medium I used with the paint.
I want to varnish it so that it resolves the problem of some parts being shinier than others on the surface-- I want it to be evenly shiny/ non-shiny all over. What should I use to varnish the painting? Should I also varnish the sides and back of the wood so that the wood will not rot or should it stay exposed to the air? Should I try a spray-on varnish? What should I look for when choosing a varnish? Thanks in advance for your technical advice! -Sonja |
