I need recent experiences of artists flying to France with their paints. I leave in June and have many different accounts of the difficulty of flying with oil paints.
You might be worrying about something needlessly. Throw the paints in your luggage (not carry on) and that's it. Done.
If they think you're smuggling drugs in France and make you open your luggage, you are carrying paints. If they take them, you buy some in France. The chances of this happening are 0. Double wrap them in plastic bags with a twist thing so there are no fumes.
I would not carry thinners - just your paints and brushes. Make arrangements to purchase thinner etc when there.
Have a nice trip! Don't worry about anything.

Thank you for your help. Have you flown to Europe recently? Emily

I've tried traveling with paints before. a big no, no! If found they will take them. If you have someone in France who can recieve packages for you. Mail them. No turps though! You'd be better off purchasing paints there.Using them and then leaving them with an artist or mailing them back. Just a suggestion. Paints are too expensive to lose. with the new rules, they are pretty strict about even hairspray and cologne!
I went to Paris last year and had to bring my own paints and supplies. I wrapped them all in a plastic bag with a towel around them. I didn't have security question it and had no problems with the paints. If you are going to Paris there are several art stores to buy small quantities of the thinners and even the canvases. Just remember, it's much more expensive there than here. Enjoy your trip and good luck!
