I am mostly a stained glass artist and watercolorist, but I just got the large box of Rembrandt oils and am having a bad reaction( my eyes are badly irritated) to the Gamsol thinner(I think)which I'm using.
I'm also using Galkyd to thin. I am generally unusually tolerant of solvents, and frequently visit my son in law's studio, who use turps, and I have no negative reactions. Anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions? I'm going to try to islate the souce of the problem for sure, but it's either the Galkyd or the Gamsol. Joseph Tracy |

By the way. This is by no means a slam against Gamblin. They seem to have a real concern for safety and from my research I saw that their products work well for many people which is why I got them. This may be a very personal reaction but it 's real.

If you read the label, Gamblin warns that "adequate ventilation" is recommended. This means that you have to have an exhaust system running that can COMPLETELY replace the air in your studio with fresh outside air 6 - 10 times PER HOUR. In other words, if you are standing in the air flow you should feel a slight breeze, and you should be able to hear faintly the sound of rushing air.
Even though Gamsol is safer than non-odorless mineral spirits, "safe" is a relative term. |
